About

Philippe Anthony Quinal is an abstract painter originally from Pomona, California, currently based in the New York area. His work has been shaped by living in Honolulu and Los Angeles, as well as other coastal and urban environments, each contributing to a practice rooted in movement, observation, and change.

Working intuitively, he builds paintings through layered gestures, erasure, and accumulation. Rather than beginning with a fixed composition, his process unfolds in real time, allowing each decision to respond directly to what is already present on the surface. This approach emphasizes immediacy, risk, and openness, where meaning is discovered through making rather than predetermined.

Central to his practice is an interest in intuition as a form of freedom—an ongoing negotiation between control and surrender. His paintings reflect this tension, holding traces of revision and uncertainty while arriving at moments of resolution that feel earned rather than imposed.

His work engages abstraction as a space for presence and transformation, where process remains visible and the act of painting becomes a record of attention, intuition, and release.
